Black and White Spider Awards is open to professional and amateur photographers shooting in all forms of black and white photography, using traditional or digital methods.  We encourage classic styles, new creative ideas and photographers who are driven by their artistic eye and a desire to excel in this classic art form.

This shot was taken on Arthurs Seat in Edinburgh and although the weather was not great its a shot that I am really pleased with.

We did a studio shoot but wanted to take advantage of the fact that Ayesha has modeled before and we followed her studio session up with a location session and something a little different.  The feedback from the location session has been fantastic and I am very pleased that Ayesha loves the images.

Ayesha does not have long to go and we would like to wish her all the best and we look forward to taking photographs of mum and baby in the next month or so.

Dunkeld Hilton House

We had the pleasure of photographing Kayleigh and Gordon’s wedding on the 19^th June 2010 at the incredibly beautiful Dunkeld Hilton House.  The hotel is set within its own secluded 280-acre estate in the beautiful Perthshire countryside.

The weather was perfect for the day.  Kayleigh and  Gordon got married in a small stone structure by the river, a beautiful setting.

Kayleigh and Gordon are a fantastic couple and we wish them all the very best for the future!

I love the history behind the fabrics and how different and unique each piece is. I can safely say the pieces are beautiful to wear and the fabric feels fantastic against the skin, I am very lucky to own one of Julie’s beautiful pieces and would highly recommend them to anyone!

Julies take on the products:

The inspiration for my label is my lifelong fascination for Japan and, in particular, an enduring love of Japanese kimonos and anything Geisha. I came across some vintage kimono fabrics six months ago and instantly fell in love with them. I was inspired and wanted to make something beautiful from them so that women of today could get the opportunity to enjoy them and get a sense of the history of the women who wore them.

I named my label in memory of my much-missed grandmother, Lizzie Onions. Her surname was Onions but, bless her, she insisted on pronouncing it ‘O’Nions’.

I make shrugs and boleros made from one-off pieces of vintage kimono fabric sourced from fabrics made between 1930 and 1970. Occasionally – material permitting – limited editions will be available. If you choose to buy a piece you do so in the knowledge that you will own a unique one-off garment made with love and care by hand. It will be something for you to treasure.

Additionally, I have designed a small collection with a 1930s look with a modern twist to complement my one-off pieces. All my fabrics are 100% pure silks, cotton, and linen.

A head shot is a photographic technique where the focus of the photograph is a person’s face. Headshot is essentially the same as portrait. However, headshot is an image that portrays people as they are and is more of a ‘mug shot’, however simple or stylized it might be. Whereas, a portrait will often ‘portray’ the person with elements of his life, such as his work, interest, etc.

Fashion Photography

Fashion photography is a genre of photography devoted to displaying clothing and other fashion items. Fashion photography is most often conducted for advertisements or fashion magazines such as Vogue, Vanity Fair, or Allure. Over time, fashion photography has developed its own aesthetic in which the clothes and fashions are enhanced by exotic locations and story lines or could be having great models with different vehicles or animals just to be an eye catching effect.

Glamour Photography

Glamour photography is a genre of photography whereby the subjects, usually female, are portrayed in a romantic or sexually alluring way. The subjects may be fully clothed or seminude, but glamour photography stops short of deliberately arousing the viewer and being softcore pornography.
Glamour photography is generally a composed image of a subject in a still position. The subjects of glamour photography are often professional models, and the photographs are normally intended for commercial use, including mass-produced calendars, pinups and for men’s magazines, such as Playboy; but amateur subjects are also sometimes used, and sometimes the photographs are intended for private and personal use only. Photographers use a combination of cosmetics, lighting and airbrushing techniques to produce an appealing image of the subject.
In North America, glamour photography of models does not usually involve fully topless shots, whereas in the UK and elsewhere topless shots are generally considered acceptable in glamour photography.

Commercial Photography

Commercial photography is probably best defined as any photography for which the photographer is paid for images rather than works of art. In this light money could be paid for the subject of the photograph or the photograph itself. Wholesale, retail, and professional uses of photography would fall under this definition.

Nude Photography

Nude photography is a style of art photography which depicts the nude human body as a study. Nude photography should be distinguished from erotic photography, which has a sexually suggestive component. Nude photography should also be distinguished from glamour photography, which places more emphasis on the model and her/his sexuality, and treats the model as the primary subject.

Portrait Photography

Portrait photography or portraiture is the capture by means of photography of the likeness of a person or a small group of people (a group portrait), in which the face and expression is predominant. The objective is to display the likeness, personality, and even the mood of the subject. Like other types of portraiture, the focus of the photograph is the person’s face, although the entire body and the background may be included. A portrait is generally not a snapshot, but a composed image of a person in a still position. A portrait often shows a person looking directly at the camera.
